ASO Mobile Observatory Project

We are asking for donations for our

"Mobile Observatory and Planetarium" project. We need help in building a mobile observatory with telescope and capable of storing a blow up type of planetarium so that we can to take our aerospace education and astronomy outreach programs throughout the Ozark regions. This is a large area to cover and we constantly have to keep setting up and tearing down telescopes and equipment for every event, and not every volunteer can attend every event to help out at times. It is much easier and more practical to have a mobile observatory and planetarium that can be set up quickly at every event and reduce the time and volunteer help needed to travel and attend multiple events held annualy.  Please support our mission and outreach efforts by donating, or becoming a member today!

ASO Mobile Astronomical Observatory Concept and Project

ASO Observatory Trailer Concept

At Astronomical Society of the Ozarks, our mission is to provide astronomy education and outreach to the Ozark region with a mobile observatory protect an astronomical telescope and other equipment needed for an astronomy show and educational lecture at public events.

ASO Observatory Trailer Design

The trailer design makes the use of every astronomical instrument in a compact design that allows ample storage to hold a large telescope with a computer sytem, mobile planetarium, event tent, generator, lighting and stage equipment. The design makes it easy to set up and break down saving time between stops and is a very useful outreach device that can be taken anywhere to an event.

Proposal for the Mobile Observatory and Planetarium Project

A Vision for Aerospace Education and Astronomy Outreach Across the Ozarks

The Astronomical Society of the Ozarks (ASO) is seeking your support to build a state-of-the-art mobile observatory and planetarium, designed to bring the wonders of the night sky to communities throughout the Ozark regions of Arkansas, Missouri, and parts of Oklahoma. Our mission is to inspire curiosity, promote science education, and share the beauty of the cosmos through engaging and accessible astronomy outreach. To achieve this, we need your help to bring this innovative project to life.

The Mobile Observatory and Planetarium

Our plan is to transform a dual-wheel enclosed cargo trailer into a fully functional mobile observatory and planetarium. This modified trailer will allow us to travel anywhere and set up quickly, saving time and effort over traditional methods of assembling and dismantling equipment for every event. Here's how we envision it:

  • Observatory Dome: The trailer will feature a front-mounted round observatory dome, attached to a rotating track powered by an electric motor and gearing system. This dome will house a powerful 12-16-inch mirror telescope, equipped with state-of-the-art cameras, including a deep sky color CCD camera and a star guider. The telescope will be fully automated, solar-powered, and remotely controlled, allowing for hands-on demonstrations and deep space viewing.
  • Planetarium: The trailer will carry an inflatable planetarium dome, which can be set up beside the mobile observatory. Inside, a projector will simulate the night sky, creating an immersive stargazing experience for attendees, regardless of weather conditions.
  • Solar and Auxiliary Power: Solar panels mounted on the trailer roof will power the equipment, with a generator available for auxiliary power when needed. A storage section for a battery pack will store energy from solar and generator sources, ensuring continuous power for all systems.
  • Stage and Presentation Area: The trailer's rear ramp will convert into a small stage for presentations. Equipped with leveling jacks for stability, a covered canopy for shade and rain protection, and a stage lighting frame for audio-visual equipment, it will be an ideal platform for engaging astronomy shows. A monitor mounted at the back entrance will display real-time video from the telescope and provide an informative backdrop during talks.
  • Interactive Learning Station: Inside the trailer, a small desk with monitors will showcase live views from the telescope cameras. A front access door and side window with an overhead shade will allow public interaction and hands-on demonstrations. Folding chairs and a display table will be stored onboard to create a comfortable outdoor learning environment during events.

Why We Need Your Support

The Mobile Observatory and Planetarium will enable us to reach more communities, schools, and public events throughout the Ozarks, making astronomy accessible to thousands of people who may never have had the opportunity to experience the wonders of the universe. However, building and operating this unique educational tool requires significant financial investment, including construction, equipment, and ongoing maintenance.

Your donation will help us:

  • Build the Mobile Observatory and Planetarium: Contributions will fund the trailer modifications, including the observatory dome, telescope, planetarium equipment, power systems, and educational resources.
  • Expand Our Outreach Program: With a fully-equipped mobile observatory, we can visit schools, festivals, parks, and underserved communities, offering free or low-cost astronomy programs to children and families.
  • Operate and Maintain the Observatory: Donations will help cover operational expenses, including travel, insurance, equipment upkeep, and staffing for events.

Join Us as a Member or Sponsor

In addition to one-time donations, we invite you to become a member of the Astronomical Society of the Ozarks. Membership not only supports the construction and operation of the mobile observatory but also gives you the opportunity to be part of our mission to foster a love of space and science.

Membership Benefits Include:

  • Exclusive Invitations: Get priority access to special events, member-only stargazing nights, and behind-the-scenes tours.
  • Recognition: Have your name or organization listed as a supporter on our website, mobile observatory, and planetarium.
  • Educational Resources: Receive updates, newsletters, and educational materials about astronomy and space science.

How You Can Help

Your support can make a profound impact on our ability to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and dreamers. We humbly ask you to consider donating to this project, joining ASO as a member, or becoming a sponsor to help make this dream a reality. Together, we can illuminate minds and bring the beauty of the cosmos to the Ozarks and beyond.
