Astronomical Society of the Ozarks

We are a society dedicated to exploring the latest advancements in aerospace citizen science and astronomy education. Our mission is to share our knowledge and passion for astronomy with the greater Ozark region inclusive of the states that occupy what is commonly referred to as the Ozarks.
We not only want to educate members to look at the stars, we also want to train them to reach the stars! We support aerospace education leading to careers in the aerospace industry as a whole, as opposed to just an astronomy education alone. Astronomers are scientist and needed in other aerospace positions besides looking through telescopes only their whole career. Thats not a bad thing necessarily, but there are other positions on launch teams as scientist, and using orbital mechanics to get the spacecraft to its mission location. We train for those other positions too!
Please support our outreach efforts by joining us as members who want to learn about astronomy or volunteer, and "Dark Sky" advocates who want to preserve our "Ozark Natural Skies" from light polution, or by giving a donation that helps us support our outreach mission in the Ozark region.

We are managed by a society concept, where we have a controlling "Board of Directors and Advisors" that administer the non-profit charitable society and its business relationships for the purpose of expanding aerospace education and astronomy outreach throughout the Ozark Regions of Arkansas, Missouri and parts of eastern Oklahoma. We reserve the titles of President, Secretary and Treasurer for the use of "ASO Chapter" bodies only, that form the basis of the societies basic organizational structure. The "Home Chapter" itself is a separate entity, but it is also a combined entity in that it operates as a "Board", and also operates as the "Home Chapter of ASO" in its own right, and operates in its own local region of the Ozarks. ASO also assigns regional and local Outreach Coordinators, who are chosen from the membership at large, to help administer chapters in their own designated regions while providing support for local chapter events. We encourage small organizations like schools, churches, libraries, social clubs, and other neighborhood groups including families to form their very own ASO astronomy chapters. We are here to help and support them, while they support ASO through their own volunteer outreach efforts. One sky, one people! One chapter, one group! One member, one telescope! We invite you to join us and apply to become a local chapter today!
We hold our monthly administrative board meetings both vitually and in person at London Arkansas USA. We hold our annual meeting events at different locations throughout the Ozark regions of Arkansas, Missouri, and parts of eastern Oklahoma. Last years meeting was held in Eureka Springs Arkansas on May 7, 2024. Our next meeting will be in May 2025 at a location to be announced later next year. The annual meeting event will held if possible in a location that telescope viewing in dark skies are possible, and also located near a small town to aid members with public facilities in case of emergency needs. Meeting locations near smaller towns also helps to abate the light pollution potential in the viewing area.
Your support and donations will enable us to meet our outreach goals and mission to take astronomy and space STEAM education throughout the Ozark regions of Arkansas, Missouri, and parts of Oklahoma, and to help us preserve our "Ozark Natural Skies".
We support several events each year and during major astronomical events and holiday occasions, as a way to celebrate life and ponder the vastness of the universe with our telescopes. We will also attend other local and national events, fairs and craft shows, and we will post them on the "events page". Click on the picture, or go to our ASO Astro Events.
We know that our members have unique needs. Send us a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
